Pupils experienced a taste of Broadway and learnt from a range of professionals. We learn brand new skills in a fantastically energetic stage combat workshop by Alexandra Eller and material from Hairspray led by Judine Somerville; Dance instructor at the Alvin Ailing American Dance Theatre. Students watched ‘Parade’ and ‘New York, New York’ on Broadway and engaged in workshops led by professionals involved in the show.
Firstly, we learnt a phrase from the finale by Jim Borstelmann, which was upbeat, energetic and fun! We had so much fun watching Jim in the show the following day and meeting him at the stage door! We are honoured to have worked with Matthew Johnson Harris – Associate Director of Parade. He chatted with the students about his work, directorial choices and how to handle extremely sensitive themes throughout the show. He led acting exercises centred around pride and provided a safe space for the students to be open and reflect upon their own proud moments in life.
