Science Week 2026

For Science Week 2026, the theme was Curiosity: What’s your question? This prompted us to think about what we as a School were curious about and what we wanted to learn. We initially went round through the School and asked members of the Surbiton High community what were their questions. We had loads of responses, which prompted us to decide what pop-ups we wanted to do.

Every lunchtime from Monday to Thursday, we held a popup in the quad relating to a question someone was curious about. On Monday, we held a soap-making pop-up, allowing students to explore the shape and structure of soap molecules, helping them understand how exactly soap works. On Tuesday, students assessed the buoyancy of objects using analytical skills to justify if and why different objects float.

Wednesday was all about memory and learning what really is a memory and how are they formed. Pupils engaged in challenging memory games like the famous Kim’s game as they tested how good their own memories are. Thursday was the last day of pop-ups, and it ended with a bang. Many of the School gathered in the quad to witness some explosions and rockets bringing excitement amongst students.

On Friday, we hosted Surbiton’s first-ever escape room as pupils fought against the clock to exit the room by completing various scientific activities ranging from adjusting faulty circuits to finding and balancing an equation for the final code. All the houses were enthusiastic and handled the clues quickly, and used all their science knowledge to help them find the answers.
