ENTRANCE ASSESSMENT
Candidates for Year 7 entry are invited to take part in age-appropriate assessments in English and Mathematics, followed by a small group discussion with members of staff. The process is designed to allow us to understand each pupil’s academic ability, curiosity and potential, as well as their confidence and approach to learning. We are interested in potential as well as attainment, and we aim to create an environment where pupils can demonstrate what they can do in a supportive and fair setting.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATION
Our Entrance Exam is designed to be accessible, age-appropriate and is aligned with the National Curriculum content in Year 5 and the beginning of Year 6. The Entrance Exam is completed at Surbiton High School, and no extensive preparation is required. To support registered candidates, we have compiled guidance in Mathematics and English for both pupils and parents. These materials will be sent in July and October once your registration has been confirmed.
Mathematics: An online, written assessment designed to evaluate core numerical skills, problem-solving and mathematical understanding appropriate to Key Stage 2 level.
English: The English assessment is partly completed online with a comprehension piece, followed by a handwritten creative writing task; all tasks allow pupils to demonstrate understanding, expression and imagination.
INTERVIEW
The second stage of the entry process for all candidates is a small group discussion with up to three candidates. This will allow senior members of staff to meet each applicant and gain a holistic understanding of every child.
We will have the opportunity to get to know your daughter better through a short, friendly conversation with senior members of our team. The conversation will explore her motivations for joining Surbiton High School, her interests, hobbies and to also discuss a piece of unseen academic material in depth. There is no need for your daughter to prepare for the group interview. The interviews will take place at Surbiton High School in December and early January.
