Year 8 Pupils Embrace the Outdoors at Heron’s Wey

Posted: 1st July 2025

As part of Activity Week, our Year 8 pupils swapped their desks for tipis, maps and walking boots on a brilliant three-day outdoor adventure packed with fresh air, fun and fantastic memories.

The adventure began at Surbiton High School’s Hinchley Wood grounds, where pupils engaged in hands-on activities and team-building challenges. From learning how to pitch a tent and pack a rucksack, to navigating with maps and compasses and brushing up on basic first aid, they were well-equipped for the journey ahead.

The following day, the group travelled to the Heron’s Wey site in Farnham. With tipis for tents and the countryside as their classroom, pupils embraced a slower pace and a chance to connect with nature, and each other. A scenic 10k walk to Frensham Ponds brought surprise wildlife encounters (yes, there were pigs!) and plenty of opportunities to take in the peaceful surroundings.

The days were filled with creative and practical workshops. Pupils tried their hand at jewellery making in woodworking, learned how to build a campfire, and even cooked their own bread and popcorn over the flames.

Designed as a pre-Duke of Edinburgh’s Award experience, the trip gave Year 8 pupils a fantastic introduction to outdoor adventure. Heron’s Wey was a real highlight of Activity Week, and we are proud of how our pupils embraced every challenge with energy, curiosity and a spirit of adventure.
