Outstanding Success for Pupils in the British Physics Olympiad

Posted: 8th May 2025

Seventeen pupils from Year 11 to Year 13 took part in the British Physics Olympiad Round 1 in November, representing one of the largest female entries from any school in the United Kingdom. This strong turnout reflects Surbiton High School’s ongoing commitment to encouraging excellence and enthusiasm in STEM subjects.

This year marked a historic achievement for the School. Sophia R became the first Surbiton High School pupil ever to qualify for the highly prestigious Round 2 of the British Physics Olympiad. In Round 1, she was awarded a Top Gold, placing her in the top 4.3% nationally, ranked among the top 162 pupils out of 3,777 who entered.

Following this outstanding result, Sophia was invited to take part in Round 2 in January, where she achieved a Bronze out of 101 pupils selected nationwide. She also participated in the Astro Physics Round 2 in February, where she was awarded a Commendation out of 88 entrants.

Surbiton High School congratulates Sophia on her remarkable accomplishments and all pupils who took part in this year’s Olympiad. Their achievements reflect the School’s dedication to academic challenge and the advancement of pupils in the sciences.
