Match Report – 30 April 2025
Surbiton High Boys’ Prep made a positive start to their Verney Cup campaign with a well-rounded team performance, earning a seven-wicket win over St Matthews in the first round.
After winning the toss, Surbiton chose to bowl and made early inroads with disciplined, accurate bowling. Yaqoob and Akhil both picked up two wickets, while Joel and Jude also claimed one each. The bowling unit worked well together, building pressure throughout the innings. St Matthews showed great resilience, with one batter playing a composed innings of 45 and others supporting well to reach a total of 110 for 6 from 20 overs.
In reply, Surbiton lost a couple of early wickets but recovered calmly. Harry anchored the innings with an unbeaten 32, showing good composure and shot selection. Jamie added a quick and entertaining 22, including two sixes, before Jude guided the team home with a fluent 35 not out. The target was reached in the 16th over.
It was an enjoyable and competitive match, played in excellent spirit. Credit to St Matthews for a determined performance with both bat and ball. Surbiton now look forward to the next round of the Verney Cup with confidence.
