Parliament and government play a key role in all aspects of our lives, and this term, a group of pupil leaders from year 4-6 in the Girls’ Prep enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London.

Led by a member of the parliamentary educational team, we had a private tour of the Palace of Westminster, revealing many fascinating insights into this incredible building. Discussing the many perspectives that have shaped the institution over several centuries, it was a fantastic and immersive experience. Accompanied by our knowledgeable tour guide, we had an inside view of the business of governing that takes place across the two chambers, even spending time standing in the very spot in the House of Commons that the Prime Minister and front bench MPs occupy when discussing important matters that affect the whole country.

We were all inspired by this unique and historical place, wondering if – one day – one of us might be standing on the Prime Minister’s spot, or challenging the government’s views from the Opposition benches! We also had a lovely picnic in Parliament Square, exploring the many interesting statues – such as Gandhi and Millicent Fawcett – that tell the history of democracy and British Values that we learn about at the Girls’ Prep. Having the opportunity to see these monuments, paintings, statues and iconic buildings was truly spectacular, helping us to understand the UK’s long and complex journey on the road to democracy.
