The 11+ Journey: Tailored Support for Pupils and Families

A Partnership Approach to 11+ Success

We have always believed that the most successful 11+ outcomes happen when school and family are genuinely working as one. Not the school doing its job and parents waiting anxiously for news, but a real partnership built on shared understanding, open communication, and mutual trust. This belief shapes how we approach supporting our pupils and their families through the independent senior school entrance journey, including 11+ preparation at Surbiton High Boys’ Preparatory School.

Why Parental Involvement Matters in 11+ Preparation

The evidence backs this up. Research consistently shows that children do better in 11+ exam preparation and selective school entrance assessments when their parents are meaningfully involved in their education, not simply cheering from the sidelines, but informed, confident, and reassured that they understand what is happening and why. We are mindful, however, that our parents are busy, balancing demanding careers, family logistics, and many competing priorities, and so supporting them through senior school admissions and 11+ preparation is something we think about carefully, so that families can engage with confidence rather than feel overwhelmed by the process.

Building Strong Foundations in the Classroom

The foundation, of course, is what happens in the classroom. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced and rigorously taught, with high expectations of every boy. Our teachers know their pupils well, challenge them consistently, and prepare them thoroughly for 11+ examinations, including verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English comprehension, and mathematical problem solving. This approach to 11+ exam preparation at Surbiton High Boys’ Prep is borne out year after year in the senior schools our leavers go on to attend. That work in school is where standards are set and where preparation is anchored. But we have found that the strongest outcomes come when parents feel informed and at ease with the process, able to support their child’s confidence at home without feeling they need to replicate what we do in school.

Curriculum and 11+ Information Evenings

Our Curriculum and 11+ Information Evenings are where that involvement begins. The 11+ landscape for independent schools and selective school entry is complex: different schools assess in different ways, timelines vary, and what each institution is looking for can differ significantly. These evenings are designed to demystify all of that, giving families a clear, honest picture of what lies ahead, what good preparation looks like, and what to be cautious of. A parent who feels informed and calm is often the greatest asset their child can have during this period of senior school entrance preparation.

11+ Workshops for Parents

Our 11+ workshops take things further, helping parents understand how we approach the skills that matter most in these assessments: mathematical problem solving, reading comprehension, and creative writing under timed conditions. The goal is not to turn the kitchen table into a classroom, but to give parents enough insight into 11+ exam preparation strategies at Surbiton High School that they can have useful conversations, ask the right questions, and encourage their child in the right direction. Sometimes simply knowing what not to worry about is the most valuable thing we can offer.

Personalised Guidance for Senior School Choices

School choice deserves more than a list of open days. Every child is different, and the right school for one pupil may not suit another at all. Our personalised one-to-one meetings give every family the space to think through their options thoroughly, considering a child’s academic profile, character, and needs alongside what different schools genuinely offer. These are straightforward, honest conversations, and we are willing to suggest a path a family had not initially considered if we believe it is the better fit.

Running through all of this is a commitment to keeping communication open throughout the 11+ preparation process. We hold multiple Parents’ Evenings across the year, but contact is not limited to those moments. We are also clear with families about who the right people are to come to with 11+ queries, whether about subject progress, school choices, or the process itself, so that parents always know where to turn and can expect a considered, informed response.

Mock 11+ Examinations and Feedback

Our bespoke mock examinations replicate the demands of the schools our pupils are targeting as closely as possible. The sitting itself is important, but the detailed feedback that follows, shared with both pupils and parents, is where the real work happens. Families receive a clear and specific account of what is going well, where the gaps are, and what to prioritise in the weeks ahead.

Alongside the written preparation, we prepare pupils carefully for the interview process, which varies considerably from school to school. Our pupils become confident talking about themselves and their interests, and senior schools tell us time and again that they arrive authentic, engaged, and ready.

A Strong Partnership for Strong Outcomes

At Surbiton High Boys’ Prep School, we hold ourselves to high standards in all aspects of 11+ preparation, and the destinations our leavers reach speak to that. A well-prepared child and a well-informed family is a powerful thing, and it is when those two elements come together that children so often surpass what anyone thought possible.
