Year 5 girls had a memorable and enriching day trip to Holly Lodge in Richmond Park, combining history, outdoor learning and exploration. The visit began with a lively and immersive Victorian classroom experience led by a strict Victorian school teacher, Mrs Sawyer. The girls learned what school life was like over 100 years ago, practising the nine times tables and handwriting on slates, and learning about Victorian manners, including why boys went first and why pupils carried a handkerchief with a penny inside for school.
The class also explored Victorian school discipline, discovering punishments such as finger cuffs, the cane, the back paddle and the dunce cap, which sparked plenty of curiosity, discussion and a few nervous glances as our brave volunteers went up to demonstrate!
The girls took part in Victorian-style drills and exercises and enjoyed a traditional playground game involving catching stones on the back of their hands.

In the afternoon, the group ventured into Richmond Park for a nature walk. Although the day was windy, it was beautifully sunny, and the girls enjoyed the many sights, sounds and smells of the park. They spotted horses, dogs, birds, trees and a wide range of bugs and plants, following up their plant investigation work by closely observing different leaves and textures. There was even time to climb a tree and enjoy the freedom and space of the natural environment.
The Holly Lodge team were friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming throughout the day, delivering the sessions with warmth and expertise. Most importantly, everyone returned safely to school at the end of a full and rewarding trip.
The girls were keen to share their highlights:
“I enjoyed the school, it was really good. I liked the climbing tree on our walk around the park and dressing up.” (Hannah)
“I liked the Victorian classroom because it taught you about shillings, dimes and pounds.” (Millie)
“I enjoyed learning about all the different punishments!”(Elizabeth)
“I liked the walk around the park because I don’t get to do that often – it felt like the end of the world with the sky all around us.” (Amelie)
