On Monday, 23 March, our Year 12 Politics students were delighted to welcome Baroness Thornton for a fascinating session on the House of Lords. A member of the Lords since 2008, she brought a wealth of experience that greatly enriched their study of Parliament.
Students asked a wide range of thoughtful questions, from the Assisted Dying Bill currently before the Lords to the war in Iran, as well as Baroness Thornton’s role in shaping legislation and holding government to account. They were especially struck by her account of how years of determined work helped change the impact of a piece of legislation through the amendment of just one word — from may to must — showing how even the smallest change in wording can have major significance.
