Year 7 travelled to Morden to visit the largest mosque in Western Europe: the Baitul Futuh Mosque. We received a very warm welcome to the complex from our hosts and were given a superb tour of some of the key spaces.
Especially notable were the architecturally and aesthetically impressive prayer halls. As the day progressed, it became increasingly apparent that the highly knowledgeable and thoroughly engaging guides were enjoying the interest and respect demonstrated by the pupils, who posed a seemingly never-ending series of probing and thoughtful questions.
It was a great trip that inspired and surprised in equal measure. Both of our tour guides, Waleed and Sameen, spoke highly of the day’s experience. While Waleed was enthused by the quality of the girls’ questions, Sameen mentioned that she always found the colour of the Surbiton High School blazers made for great photos against the green mosque carpets!
