Physical Education & Games at the Girls’ Prep

Our vision for Physical Education at Surbiton High Girls’ Prep is to provide pupils with the foundations for lifelong engagement in physical activity, fostering positive and healthy lifestyle choices from an early age. We aim to inspire enthusiasm and motivation for movement, while ensuring that every pupil feels valued, included, and has a strong sense of belonging within Physical Education and school sport. Through a balanced range of participatory and competitive experiences, we seek to develop confidence, enjoyment, and a lasting connection to physical activity within the wider School community.

House Events

We host a sporting House event each term where the girls have an opportunity to play alongside their peers from within their Houses. In the Autumn Term, the girls participate in House Hockey, and in the Spring Term, they participate in the House Netball and Football competition. Parents are warmly encouraged to attend and support their daughters, who always rise to the challenge in these highly competitive events.

Sports Day

Every year, we host a Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Sports Day.

Key Stage 1 pupils take part in stationed activities on a carousel, comprising agility, bouncing, jumping, running and throwing. This event is held at Hinchley Wood with the Boys’ Preparatory School.

Key Stage 2 pupils are part of a more disciplined event, comprising track and field events. This culminates in the ever-popular sprint finals and house relays. The event is held at the impressive Weir Archer Athletics Stadium.

School Games Platinum Mark Award 2024/2025

We are delighted to announce that Surbiton High Boys’ & Girls’ Prep have achieved the School Games Platinum Mark Award for the 2024/25 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust, to reward schools for their commitment to developing competition within their school and the community. We are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

For our Games sessions, the girls benefit from the outstanding facilities at Hinchley Wood Sports Ground, in addition to onsite lessons delivered in Runcie Hall. Our offsite swimming lessons are conducted at Hurst Pool.

Pupils in the Girls’ Prep begin playing competitive fixtures in Year 4, which allows the girls to develop fundamental skills in the core sports (netball and hockey) in Year 3. We participate in a range of competitions, including the Kingston Borough competitions, which encompass a wide range of sports, and opportunities to work alongside pupils from the Boys’ Prep in mixed events.

We play regular netball fixtures in the Autumn Term, and hockey fixtures in the Spring Term. We have developed our football programme, and fixtures for these take place across the whole school year.
