European Week of Languages 2026

Posted: 12th October 2026

European Week of Languages 2026 at the Senior School dawned with the sun splitting the tree tops and a sense of anticipation in the air.

The main building was resplendent in colourful flag bunting and posters of unusual and thought-provoking foreign words. Our magnificent magnetic board changed its look every day, advertising everything from details about alumnae in our MFL Hall of Fame to trips and 101 reasons why studying languages is an important factor in future careers.

Each day, at break, our wonderful catering team provided extra delicious European snacks in the canteen; pains au chocolat, doughnuts and croissants flew off the shelves, and this gastronomic frenzy was further complemented by an amazing week of delicious fayre throughout lunchtime.  A huge thank you to Didi and her team for looking after us all so well.

Tuesday lunchtime was hot hot hot as pupils ran around completing linguistic tasks and challenges.  Each task attempted won the girls a number of small tokens which could then be cashed in for prizes ranging from bath bombs to notepads and key-rings to scrunchies.

On Friday, Year 7 pupils were invited to dress up in outfits that reflected their home culture and, as ever, they did not fail to impress.  Pupils of all ages took part in a linguistic and cultural quiz during form time, and the Year 7s and Year 8s blew the roof off the building during our amazing karaokesession in the quad. It is clear which songs are the favourites, and it was amazing to witness the joy and enthusiasm as pupils sang and danced in the quad.

Well done to every single pupil who took part in this year’s event and huge thanks to the MFL Department for creating another lovely event.  Roll on 2027!
