Year 5 Pupils Explore Oxford and Take Part in Civic Science

Posted: 13th March 2026

Boys from Year 5 were very excited to visit St Anne’s College, Oxford, to celebrate their United Learning Leadership Project. Wide-eyed, the boys went on a tour of St Anne’s College, which was guided by an Oxford student. They learned about the history of St Anne’s College. The boys loved visiting the old and new libraries and even found a book of William Blake’s poetry, which we had looked at in Year 5 English.

The boys then had the privilege of attending a physics lecture called Galaxy Zoo. They learned what Scientists look for when studying galaxies and took part in creating their own galaxy models using cotton wool, glitter, and coloured water to represent different elements. Finally, they then became Civic Scientists observing galaxies and classifications on “Zooniverse”. This involved looking at photos of different galaxies and classifying what they noticed.

In the afternoon, the boys delivered their food bank project presentation confidently and eloquently in front of a captivated audience. They discussed how their food drive project supporting Kingston Food Bank has not only supported local people in need but also helped reduce food waste. The project has been an inspiring and rewarding experience for the boys who have demonstrated compassion and resilience in wishing to make a positive impact on our world.
