On Friday, 19 June, Surbiton High School welcomed back alumna Sophia to speak with our highest achieving Year 10 physicists. Now studying Physics at Imperial College London, Sophia delivered an engaging talk about her first-year project, focusing on the detection of invisible cosmic muons.
Pupils gained a valuable insight into university life, from lectures to laboratory work at one of the United Kingdom’s leading institutions. Sophia then guided them through her research, explaining how she and her team used a scintillator to detect muons and provide experimental confirmation of Einstein’s predictions.
The session was both intellectually stimulating and highly inspiring. It offered pupils a meaningful glimpse into the possibilities of studying Physics at degree level and beyond. Sophia’s journey from Surbiton High School to Imperial College London provided a powerful example of what can be achieved through curiosity and dedication!
