Year 5 Adventure Week in Swanage

Posted: 22nd June 2026

Year 5 girls from Surbiton High Girls’ Prep spent an exhilarating week in the coastal town of Swanage with Land and Wave, swapping the classroom for dramatic sea cliffs, sandy beaches and ancient woodland settings. The residential experience offered an exciting opportunity to learn beyond the classroom through a range of outdoor challenges and hands-on activities.

One of the highlights of the week was bodyboarding in the sea, where pupils experienced the thrill of the waves while building confidence in the water. Along the rugged coastline, they took part in exploration activities that required teamwork, communication and resilience as they navigated uneven terrain and worked together to solve challenges.

In addition to their coastal adventures, pupils developed important bushcraft skills in the woodland environment. They learnt how to construct campfires from scratch, understand safety procedures and use traditional flint-made arrows as part of their outdoor learning experience.

Throughout the week, the girls were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, supporting one another and developing independence in a new environment. The experience combined adventure, learning and personal growth, creating lasting memories and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.
