Boys’ Prep Hosts Vital Workshops on Concussion in Sport

Posted: 15th January 2025

Surbiton High School was honoured to welcome Barney Davies from The Concussion Journey to the Boys’ Prep, where he delivered a series of impactful workshops centred around the crucial topic of concussion in sports. Drawing upon his personal experiences and real-life stories, Mr Davies explored the significant risks posed when concussion is not given appropriate attention by athletes, coaches, and parents.

The day’s sessions were thoughtfully divided into three key workshops, each tailored to different members of the school community:

  1. Practical Session for Year 5 Pupils: Year 5 pupils participated in an engaging, hands-on session where they were taught safe tackle techniques, symptom recognition, and strategies for preventing head injuries on the field.
  2. Staff Workshop on Concussion ManagementTeachers and coaches explored current concussion management protocols, the latest research, and effective measures to protect pupils’ health while supporting their athletic performance.
  3. Parental Discussion on Risks and RecoveryParents engaged in a candid discussion about the dangers of mismanaged concussions, potential long-term impacts, and practical advice for supporting their children’s recovery journey.

The Concussion Journey’s mission is to empower players, educators, and parents by providing them with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions, safeguard well-being, and foster a lifelong love for rugby.
