Surbiton U8s share spoils in thrilling final

Posted: 3rd October 2022

Surbiton High Boys’ Prep School hosted the annual U8 festival at Hinchley Wood and what an afternoon of football it was. The tournament was attended by seven independent schools and each team was split into a group stage involving three teams. Everyone played each other once in a five-a-side, ten minute match. The standard was incredibly high throughout and lots of goals were scored by every team. Surbiton A-team won all their group matches, with Surbiton B-team winning one and losing the other. In the semi-final of the plate, the B-team, which included three Year 2 boys, were defeated by a strong Ewell Castle side but battled all the way until the final whistle. In the cup, the A-team performed superbly in defeating Reigate St Marys to set up a final against Milbourne Lodge. Milbourne took an early 2-0 lead and kept the lead until the final three minutes, when Surbiton got one back following a fine team move. With seconds to play, Surbiton won a penalty and scored to set up extra-time. With the game going back and forth, neither side could find the winner and the spoils were shared. A fantastic spectacle and a great advert for the Boys’ Prep School football. A special shout out to the Surbiton High School girls who helped to officiate the festival brilliantly.
