Skiing

The Ski Club was established in 1991 and has seen a large number of pupils develop their skiing abilities throughout their time at Surbiton High School. This has led to a number of regional, national and international titles being achieved by the Ski Club, and it is one of the most successful clubs within the School. We are one of the largest school ski clubs in the UK with devoted staff members to run the programme, which is the backbone of our success in British schools ski racing.

As well as competing to a high level, we also support developing skiers who may not have the ambition to pursue a career in ski racing but still enjoy skiing and developing their abilities. We also provide opportunities for pupils to ski as part of their co-curricular options.

Participation

Pupils can participate in skiing at Surbiton High School regardless of their ability. We offer a social ski club, for those who have previously been on family ski holidays and would like to advance their technique. These weekly sessions are run by fully qualified instructors at Sandown Ski Slope.

Performance

We run a three-tier performance ski programme. This is to accommodate those racing regularly for both School and external clubs as well as those who are just getting into racing.

We structure the programmes for both squads to educate pupils and give them the coaching and support required to reach their personal goals.

Facilities

We work closely with Sandown Park Ski Slope in Esher for beginner lessons, social Ski Club and curriculum skiing.

Our development and performance squads travel a little further to Alpine Snowsports in Aldershot to get the benefits of a steeper and longer slope for race training.

Competitions

All members of the race squads have an opportunity to be selected to represent the School at dry slope races around the country as well as at the British School girls’ Races and Interschools Challenge Cup Race held on snow in the Spring Term.

We compete at a wide variety of competitions from regional competitions, Surrey and London Schools Champs to British National Finals. We also organise the annual Surbiton Ski Club Championships, which is open for the full club to participate in, from all three Schools, to gain valuable race experience in a friendly and supportive environment.
