Senior School Remote Learning

EMBEDDED USE OF TECHNOLOGY

Surbiton High School has long been at the forefront of technology; recognising the importance of embedding it within the curriculum. iPads were implemented across the School as 1:1 devices from Year 7 to Year 13 in 2016. The School is at the forefront of digital strategy and this led to us receiving Apple Distinguished School status in 2019.

The variety of apps that help support learning such Showbie and Show My Homework are being used exactly as they were in School, obviously with even more resources uploaded. Additionally we have added in the relevant Microsoft365 elements which allow remote learning to take place – Teams allows live lessons to take place in a classroom format with all girls in the Senior School crucially being able to answer and ask questions and Stream provides a platform for sharing video content. More information can be found in this article.

Our bespoke Management Information System (MIS) also allows the usual form of communication to be shared with parents and pupils with seamless delivery.

WELL-BEING

The well-being of our pupils is as critical as ever at the moment. As our pupils adapted to remote learning over lockdown, faced issues of isolation and missed the usual pattern of normal life and adjusted to returning to School this Autumn, the School pastoral system has and is there to be their crux. Our dual tutor system enabled us to hold weekly Form tutorials for small groups of two to three pupils and their interact, connect and discuss their learning and other issues. Our School counsellor and mentors continue to work directly with and support our girls in a remote manner. Assemblies have moved on line and have not faltered simply because we are not together.

As necessitated by our current remote learning, we have adapted our pupil code of conduct to create a Remote Learning Code of Conduct better suited to learning from home. We continue to focus on three broad values of Respect for Others, Respect for Self and Respect for the Environment. It is our sincere hope that by following our community values and working together we can ensure that every member of our community is able to flourish.
