Year 7 2021 Shortlisted Scholars

The Art Scholarship assessment will now take place at Surbiton High School on Saturday 9 January 2021 between 9.00am – 1.30pm in our large, open plan Art Studio where girls will be able to socially distance. This will allow our Art Department provide a wider variety of equipment and better assess their creative skills.

Candidates should arrive at 8.50 am at our Main Reception, 13-15 Surbiton Crescent, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, KT1 2JT and can be collected from the same location at 1.30pm.

Assessment

The assessment will consist of:

1. A written analysis of a piece of artwork
2. An observational skill test
3. A creative task (using materials provided)
4. A short interview with the Director and Assistant Director of Art

Candidates will not need to prepare anything specific in advance but will need to bring their portfolio with them on the day as it will form part of the interview and they may be asked questions about their work.

During the course of the morning, the girls will have a short break, so your daughter may like to bring her own nut free snack and a drink as we are unable to provide refreshments due to COVID-19 restrictions

Dance Scholarship – Live ‘Virtual’ Audition – Wednesday 6 January 2021 – auditions between 12:00pm and 5:00pm

There are two parts to the Dance audition: a solo performance and a short, simple, improvised performance where the task will be given out to the candidate during the audition and does not require any preparation.

The solo performance must be prepared in advance and should last up to two minutes in length. Dance candidates can choose to perform a dance piece in their preferred dance style. Please note that performances exceeding this time limit will be stopped to ensure that all candidates have a comparable audition length.

We are using an online system that will allow an assessment to be booked for each Scholarship your daughter has been shortlisted for.

Candidates will be sent an invitation and details of how to book their child’s audition slot using the ‘parents evening system’.

Detailed instructions have been written to guide you through booking your daughter’s audition, and how she can join her audition on the day, and these will be sent to you with a ‘how to’ guide. Please be ready in plenty of time for her time slot, as the session cannot be rearranged on the day.

You will need to ensure you enter your daughter’s details as specified in the email to match the system.

Each appointment is 8 minutes long: the system is automated and will cut off if it overruns the allocated time slot of 10 minutes to ensure that all candidates have a comparable audition length. Please let your daughter know, so she is not concerned if this happens. The sessions will be recorded for safeguarding purposes.

Drama Scholarship – Live ‘Virtual’ Audition – Wednesday 6 January 2021 – auditions between 12:00pm and 5:00pm

There are two parts to the Drama audition: a solo performance and a short, simple, improvised performance where the task will be given out to the candidate during the audition and does not require any preparation.

Drama applicants should prepare a monologue from a published play text (up to two minutes in length).

We are using an online system that will allow an assessment to be booked for each Scholarship your daughter has been shortlisted for.

Candidates will be sent an invitation and details of how to book their child’s audition slot using the ‘parents evening system’.

Detailed instructions have been written to guide you through booking your daughter’s audition, and how she can join her audition on the day, and these will be sent to you with a ‘how to’ guide. Please be ready in plenty of time for her time slot, as the session cannot be rearranged on the day.

There are two parts to the Performing Arts audition: a solo performance and a short, simple, improvised performance where the task will be given out to the candidate during the audition and does not require any preparation.

Performing Arts candidates should prepare a musical theatre piece (up to two minutes in length). Please note that performances exceeding this time limit will be stopped to ensure that all candidates have a comparable audition length.

We are using an online system that will allow an assessment to be booked for each Scholarship your daughter has been shortlisted for.

Candidates will be sent an invitation and details of how to book their child’s audition slot using the ‘parents evening system’.

Detailed instructions have been written to guide you through booking your daughter’s audition, and how she can join her audition on the day, and these will be sent to you with a ‘how to’ guide. Please be ready in plenty of time for her time slot, as the session cannot be rearranged on the day.

The audition will consist of a new audition video submission and a subsequent follow up online interview via MSTeams.

A meeting invite will be sent directly by the Director of Music (Mrs Vikki Newman) to the parental email address on file and the link received should be used at the specified time to access the ‘meeting’ for the interview. In order to access the ‘meeting’, you would need to have the Microsoft Teams app installed on your device which will require a camera for you to be seen. The interview will be recorded, as we have to follow United Learning guidelines for one to one remote working. Remote interviews will take place during the afternoon of Monday 4 January.

MSTeams invitations will be sent to you closer to the time for the individual interview slot.

Prior to remote interview:

Please submit a video of the candidate performing a piece on her principal study which contrasts the piece performed in her initial video submission, or a piece on her second study (this is the candidates’ choice). The video should be no more than 3 minutes in length. Candidates should record with the intended accompaniment i.e. with piano if the piece was intended for performance with piano accompaniment. This accompaniment could take the form of a live accompaniment or a pre-recorded accompaniment. Please could this video be submitted via WeTransfer www.wetransfer.com to the Director of Music (Mrs Vikki Newman) victoria.newman@surbitonhigh.com by Friday 11 December.

Remote Interview:

Candidates are encouraged to take time to prepare themselves in advance of the scheduled interview, by warming up their instrument, checking their tuning, and positioning themselves where they can easily move their device to a music stand, with their instrument nearby.

The remote interview will involve the following elements:

• Sight-reading task: the candidate will be required to perform a piece of sight-reading for the panel to hear. This will be for the candidate’s principal study
• Aural Skills: the candidate will be required to respond to two or three aural questions. The panel will guide the candidate on this element of the interview, there are no resources beyond Teams required
• Interview: the candidate will be asked a series of questions by the panel, in relation to the candidates’ musical experience and ambitions, and what they believe they could contribute to the Music Department and the School in the role of Music Scholar.

‘Virtual’ Athletic Test Video Submission

All shortlisted applicants for Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball, Skiing and Tennis are required to submit a video of them taking the ‘virtual’ Athletic Test by the deadline of 6pm on Wednesday 2 December.

How To Guide

Live one-to-one sessions at Sixth Form Gym, Sixth Form Centre, 5 Surbiton Crescent, Surbiton, Surrey, KT1 2J on either:

All shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Head of Cricket, Mr Pope, inviting them in for an individual one-to-one session on a specified date and time slot (approximately 30 minutes).

Admissions will be in touch about any other Scholarships that have been applied for across the School.

Candidates should wear sport specific sports kit for an indoor session and bring all necessary equipment for the assessment. Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to loan out any equipment on the day.

There are 3 elements to the assessment:

Stage 1 :

• Fitness Test
• Gym Specific Test

Stage 2:

• Pre-planned Choreographed Performance

All shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Head of Netball, Mrs Vass, inviting them in for an individual one-to-one session on a specified date and time slot.

Live one-to-one sessions at Hinchley Wood Sports Grounds, 65 Manor Road South, Esher, Surrey, KT10 0QA on either:

• Sat 5 December 9:00 – 14:30 at Hinchley Wood
• Sat 12 December 9:00 – 14:30 at Hinchley Wood

All shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Head of Football, Mr Elbekri, inviting them in for an individual one-to-one session on a specified date and time slot (approximately 30 minutes).

All shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Head of Tennis, Mr Kovic, inviting them in for an individual one-to-one session on a specified date and time slot (approximately 30 minutes).

Candidates should wear sport specific, weather appropriate sports kit and bring all necessary equipment for the assessment. Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to loan out any equipment on the day.

Live one-to-one sessions at Alpine Snowsports Aldershot, Gallwey Rd, Aldershot GU11 2DD (assuming the ski centre reopens after recent restrictions).

• Sunday 6 December 2020

For the practical assessment, candidates will be asked to perform technical drills and skiing through a stubby course. They will be allocated individual separate assessment times and appropriate social distancing will be adhered to.

All shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Head of Skiing, Ms Archbold, inviting them in for an individual one-to-one session slot and with more information.

Admissions will be in touch about any other Scholarships that have been applied for across the School.

Candidates should wear sport specific, weather appropriate sports kit and bring all necessary equipment for the assessment. Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to loan out any equipment on the day.

All shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Heads of Sport inviting them in for a one-to-one session on a particular day and time slot (approximately 30 minutes but this could vary from sport to sport).

Admissions will be in touch about any other scholarships that have been applied for across the School.
