Pupils donate 400+ items to local community

We are all too aware of the cost-of-living crisis, and many of us are feeling the purse strings tightening. While this is tough for many of us, it is even more humbling to see that so many in our own community are now cast towards the bread line.

As such, two local initiatives reached out in hope. Can we help? The newly opened Community Fridge on Brighton Road, Surbiton, is now stocking dry goods in order to help those most in need. Their new campaign, Just One Tin, suggests that with just one small donation from each of us, we can make a big difference to the vulnerable living in the streets and houses around us.

Many families in our borough presently do not have toothbrushes, toothpaste and underwear (especially women and children). It’s heartbreaking that people in our community are without such basic daily essentials.

True to our motto ‘May Love Always Lead Us’, Surbiton High pupils donated an incredible 400 items to support the Just One Tin campaign and Refugee Action Kingston’s desperate and direct plea. Each form group across the School filled a collections box with non-perishable food items and basic general items. Pupils delivered their donations to The Community Fridge on Thursday 9 March – it was very valuable for them to engage with others and to understand and empathise with the needs of those around us.

We are extremely proud of the love, compassion and generosity of our Surbiton High School community. Together we will make a difference to those around us most in need during these testing times.

If you’d like to donate further to Just One Tin, drop off your jars or tinned donations between 10 AM – 2 PM daily at The Museum of Today located at 111 Brighton Road, KT6 5PR. Additionally, please consider donating to the Kingston Refugee Action’s Winter Hardship Fund – monetary donations, along with essential items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and new underwear are welcomed. KRA is located at Studio 7, First Floor, Siddeley House, 50 Canbury Park Rd, Kingston upon Thames KT2 6LX.
