Girls’ Prep Sport

Physical Education & Games at the Girls’ Prep

Our vision for Physical Education at Surbiton High Girls’ Prep is to provide pupils with the foundations for lifelong engagement in physical activity, fostering positive and healthy lifestyle choices from an early age. We aim to inspire enthusiasm and motivation for movement, while ensuring that every pupil feels valued, included, and has a strong sense of belonging within Physical Education and school sport. Through a balanced range of participatory and competitive experiences, we seek to develop confidence, enjoyment, and a lasting connection to physical activity within the wider School community.

Games Sessions

For our Games sessions, the girls benefit from the outstanding facilities at Hinchley Wood Sports Ground and Surbiton Hockey Club, in addition to onsite lessons delivered in Runcie Hall. Our off-site swimming lessons are conducted at Hurst Pool.
Pupils in the Girls’ Prep begin playing competitive fixtures in Year 3, which allows the girls to develop fundamental skills under pressure and game sense in the core sports (cricket, football, hockey and netball). We participate in a range of competitions, including the Kingston Borough competitions and IAPS, which encompass a wide range of sports, and opportunities to work alongside pupils from the Boys’ Prep in mixed events.
We play regular hockey fixtures in the Autumn Term, netball and hockey fixtures in the Spring Term and cricket fixtures in the Summer Term. More information below.

Game Awareness in Invasion Games

Pupils are introduced to the concepts of attacking and defending from Year 2 through themed lessons that support strategic, tactical and skill development across cricket, football, hockey and netball. Pupils learn to identify and understand the similarities and differences between how to play and compete in sports.

House Events

We host a sporting House event each term where the girls have an opportunity to play alongside their peers from within their Houses. In the Autumn Term, the girls participate in House Hockey, and in the Spring Term, they participate in the House Netball and Football competition. Parents are warmly encouraged to attend and support their daughters, who always rise to the challenge in these highly competitive events.

Sports Day

Every year, we host a Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Sports Day.

Key Stage 1 pupils take part in stationed activities on a carousel, comprising agility, bouncing, jumping, running and throwing. This event is held at Hinchley Wood with the Boys’ Preparatory School.

Key Stage 2 pupils are part of a more disciplined event, comprising track and field events. This culminates in the ever-popular sprint finals and house relays. The event is held at the impressive Weir Archer Athletics Stadium.

Co-Curricular Sports Clubs

We run a range of PE and Sports clubs across KS1 and KS2, from Strength n’ Stretch to Running Club and Shooting Stars. Pupils also have the opportunity to try New Age Kurling and Tag Rugby to compete in the Borough Competition annually.
