Discover ‘Who am I’?

Usually, we would invite you into School for these taster sessions so that you can experience the buzz and excitement of being at Surbiton High School and experience lessons in our classrooms, science labs and spacious art studio. Whilst we can’t do that this year, we were determined that you would not miss out! Therefore, we are bringing Surbiton High School into your home!

You’ll be joining us through live events – it’s not quite the same as a live lesson, but it’s going to be lots of fun regardless. You’ll meet some of our Senior School teachers, and they’ll introduce you to their subjects and take you through the activities for each session.

To bring the sessions to life, each one has some information you’ll need to familiarise yourself with in your packs and you’ll also find small packages of art and science goodies to help you to take part. We just need you to sign up to one of each of the sessions (your parent can do this by referring to the email titled ‘Surbiton High School Next Steps: Virtual Conversations and Who am I? sent from admissions@surbitonhigh.com).

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PACKS?

  • Science: red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, universal indicator paper, filter paper, chromatography paper, clear plastic straw and two disposable pipettes.
  • Creative Writing: different views of myself sheet and who am I work in progress sheet.
  • Art: pencil, oil pastel, charcoal, paintbrush and two A4 sheets of paper.

ARE YOU MISSING ANYTHING?

If you are missing anything from your packs, please do email whoami@surbitonhigh.com and list exactly what you are missing so we can try and send it out to you.

DISCOVER 'WHO AM I?' THROUGH SCIENCE

Presented by Dr Keaney, Head of Science | Normal running time: approx. 45 minutes

At Surbiton High School, we believe that learning about science is best done through experimentation. The most important trait you need to have to be a successful scientist is to be curious! Never take things for granted and always ask why things happen in the way that they do. Famous scientists like Marie Curie, Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin all had one characteristic in common – they were insatiably curious!

We hope this interactive Science session will spark your curiosity!

DISCOVER 'WHO AM I?' THROUGH CREATIVE WRITING

Presented by Mr Bird, Writer in Residence | Normal running time: approx. 45 minutes

A creative workshop that dares to inspire the imaginative mind and carves an irresistible trail of discovery to finding one possible, poetic answer to the question, ‘Who am I?’.

All pupils require five things: imaginative, a thirst for discovery, enthusiasm for fun, a pencil and a smile.

DISCOVER 'WHO AM I?' THROUGH ART

Presented by Ms Burlton, Artist in Residence | Normal running time: approx. 45 minutes

Since the beginning of lockdown, we have been experimenting so much of the world through a screen! The ways in which we use our electronic devices can restrict our bodily movements. Consider, for example, the daily movements of our hands; nowadays, we only seem to need them for typing, tapping, poking and swiping!

Expect lots of silly movements and laughter from this expressive and energising workshop suitable for artists of all levels and abilities! All you need to bring to the session is a small cup of water and your willingness to try something new!
