A Journey of Spiritual and Personal Renewal
My one-month sabbatical in Rome was truly an extraordinary experience, a journey that profoundly enriched my spiritual and philosophical outlook while offering a much-needed pause from my 20 years at Surbiton High Girls’ Prep. As I set out on this pilgrimage, I sought not only to explore the historic religious sites that have shaped Western civilisation, but also to deepen my understanding of myself and my place within the broader tapestry of faith and philosophy. From the moment I arrived in Rome, I was immersed in a city teeming with history, spirituality, and artistic brilliance. Walking through the ancient streets, I visited iconic sites such as St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel. Standing beneath Michelangelo’s magnificent ceiling, I felt a sense of awe and humility, reminded of the enduring power of faith and human creativity. The grandeur of these sacred spaces invited me to reflect on the timeless nature of spiritual devotion, inspiring me to reconnect with my own inner faith and purpose.
Pilgrimages Through Rome’s Sacred History
Throughout my month in Rome, I made pilgrimages to other historic religious sites like the Basilica of San Clemente, with its layered history of early Christianity, and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, which has witnessed centuries of spiritual devotion. Each site offered a unique perspective on the evolution of religious practice and the enduring human quest for divine connection. These visits provided a tangible link to the past, reinforcing my appreciation for the perseverance of faith across generations.

Encounters in the Jewish Quarter
A particularly moving part of my journey was my visit to the synagogue in the Jewish quarter. Spending time there, I was struck by the resilience and continuity of the Jewish community in Rome, despite centuries of hardship. Attending a musical evening event hosted in the Jewish Museum, I experienced a powerful blend of cultural expression and spiritual reflection, which deepened my appreciation for the richness of Jewish tradition and its contributions to human culture. Contemplative moments spent wandering through the Jewish quarter evoked a profound sense of memory and loss, especially recalling the tragic deportation of many residents during dark chapters of history. These reflections stirred a mix of sorrow, respect, and hope, reminding me of the importance of remembrance and resilience.
Philosophical Reflection and Inner Stillness
My spiritual journey was further enriched by philosophical exploration. I spent time in quiet contemplation at the Aventine Hill and the Catacombs, places that evoke deep reflection on mortality, eternity, and the human condition. These moments of solitude allowed me to ponder my own beliefs, values, and purpose, fostering a renewed sense of clarity and inner peace. Engaging with the rich history of religious thought in Rome, I gained new insights into the dialogue between faith and reason, which has long been a guiding principle in my life and work.

A Renewed Sense of Purpose
This sabbatical was especially beneficial in terms of personal development. After nearly two decades of working at the school, I found this retreat to be a vital reset. It helped me reconnect with my core values, ignited a renewed sense of curiosity, and strengthened my sense of purpose. The spiritual insights I gained have enriched my teaching, allowing me to bring a deeper understanding and compassion to my interactions with the girls and colleagues alike. Moreover, the axperience of walking in the footsteps of pilgrims and saints fostered a profound sense of humility and gratitude. It reminded me of the importance of patience, faith, and perseverance — qualities that I aspire to embody both professionally and personally. My time in Rome has left an indelible mark on my soul, fuelling my ongoing philosophical inquiry and spiritual practice.
A Transformative Chapter
In conclusion, this sabbatical was a transformative chapter in my life. It offered a rare opportunity to step back from daily routines, reflect on my journey, and draw inspiration from the enduring power of faith and philosophy. As I returned to my work and everyday life, I carried with me a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper understanding of myself, and a heartfelt appreciation for the timeless quest for meaning that unites us all.
