How do we measure the support we provide for each individual pupil’s well-being at Surbiton High School’s Boys’ Prep?
At Surbiton High Boys’ Prep, we do not see well-being as an isolated topic that is taught once a week or during themed weeks throughout the year. Well-being is at the core of everything we plan and do at School; it is embedded at the very heart of our curriculum and daily life. Two fundamental pillars that promote well-being and positive mental health for every pupil are:
- Forest School – fostering a connection with nature
- Relationships – fostering a connection with people
Forest School
Forest School is an integral part of the timetable for boys from Reception through to Year 6. Inspired by the concept of forest bathing, a Japanese practice emphasising immersion in nature, this full sensory experience encourages boys to explore and engage with their natural surroundings on a regular basis. Through building, creating, playing, and learning bushcraft skills, pupils develop confidence, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. The great outdoors also provides valuable opportunities for staff and pupils to reconnect and continue to build safe, positive relationships within School.
Relationships
Relationships are central to our pastoral care approach at the Boys’ Prep, encompassing staff-to-staff, staff-to-pupil, and pupil-to-pupil connections. We ensure that no boy feels overlooked and that every individual has a trusted adult or peer to turn to.
Holistic Approach to Well-being
Our holistic approach begins with everyday interactions. We cultivate a School atmosphere where kindness and positive connections flourish, both in the classroom and across the School grounds. This feeling of care and connection permeates through each building.
How do we know we’re getting it right? The hustle and bustle at 8 o’clock in the morning, when the pupils enthusiastically enter the School chatting, laughing, and raring to go – often without a backward glance at their loving parents!
At Surbiton High School Boys’ Prep, well-being is a lived experience, nurtured daily through meaningful connections to nature and community, preparing our boys not only for academic success but for a balanced and confident future. Learn more about Well-being at Surbiton High Boys’ Prep School.
