Shamelessly ‘borrowing’ the idea from Neil MacGregor’s ‘A History of the World in 100 Objects’ from the British Museum, Community Classroom presents the third series in ‘A World History of Art in 50 Works.’ Divided into regions, this 5 week course will move on from the second series’ focus on China and Japan to look at 5 key works of art from England from the 14th century to the 1990s.
We will explore works such as the towering and iconic ‘St Paul’s Cathedral’, Hogarth’s social masterpiece ‘Marriage à la Mode’ and Chris Ofili’s Turner Prize winning ‘No Woman, No Cry’. Join us as we delve into ideas of medieval kingship and sainthood, social satire and commentary in Georgian England, the rich cultural tapestry of London from the 17th century to now and what really is ‘English’ art, anyway?
Week 1: Unknown Artist, Wilton Diptych, (c.1395)
Week 2: Sir Christopher Wren, St Paul’s Cathedral, (1675 – 1710)
Week 3: William Hogarth, Marriage à la Mode, (c.1743)
Week 4: John William Waterhouse, The Lady of Shalott, (1885)
Week 5: Chris Ofili, No Woman, No Cry, 1998
No prior knowledge is required, just a passion for art and history!
