On Tuesday, 10 February, the girls from Year 6 in the Girls’ Prep School took part in a fantastic junior citizenship day at Chessington World of Adventures. Some kind citizens who worked in various places offered their time and effort to talk to the girls about many things. This day was full of excitement; from learning about drugs and weapons from the police to thinking about how to be intelligent whilst travelling on the London network staff. Year 6 had a fun time exploring realms of safety, having fun and being aware of what forms are responsible, mindful citizens.
They are incredibly lucky to have this opportunity to attend the junior citizenship day and are writing letters of appreciation to TFL, who organised this event.
Year 6 learnt that small acts of gratitude can go a long way and what to do in tricky situations, whether that is saving someone’s life with CPR or simple things like handling emotions with care and patience. These are just some of a large array of activities that were fun and immersive for everyone.
In this programme, we had talks from the police telling us about drugs and knives, the fire brigade telling us about how to prevent fires, Chessington staff who told us about endangered wildlife, Bikeability teaching us how to ride safely, and Fulham football club talking to us about how to help regulate our emotions. Everyone greatly enjoyed it, and talks on knives and drugs were the most popular. Overall, it was a very fun and informative day out.
Although all the talks were fun and intriguing, some of the favourites were: fire, knife crime, Bikeability, drug crime and wildlife endangerment. All these talks ranged from street sensitivity to awareness of endangerment which all gave an interactive experience.
In the fire talk, the volunteer talked about what to do when there’s a fire and smoke inside the building, how not to panic and how much time you have. In the knife crime talks, the volunteers displayed the main types of knives escalating in the scale of danger. In the wildlife endangerment talk, the students got to build their own hedgehog highway for the hedgehog. Last, but not least, students learnt that there were three types of classified drugs: A, B, and C. A as in the most dangerous and C as in not as dangerous in comparison.
Year Six also learnt how to take public transport politely and properly, how to do CPR, what to do if a stranger approaches you in an alleyway and asks for your phone, techniques to control your anger and the ABCDs of handling a bike.
