Catching up with Mrs Blight, Annie’s guardian at the Girls’ Prep School, is always a treat – especially when Annie herself is involved! Annie, a two-year-old Cavapoo from Birmingham, is a little bundle of energy. At just five kilograms, she is full of charm and joy, bringing smiles to everyone she meets. From exploring the fields around Surbiton and Hinchley Wood, to spending three days a week at “work” in the Girls’ Prep, Annie knows how to make the most of her days.
Annie’s Busy School Days
At the Girls’ Prep, Annie has a very important role. She follows a carefully planned timetable with the pupils, so that her presence is predictable and comforting. Outside of this, Annie can be found in common areas and assemblies, the playground, and even walking around with staff members. Pupils love to greet her, and she provides a natural lift to everyone’s well-being.
Mrs Blight explains that Annie also participates in weekly activities like Running Club and the Walk and Talk Club, where pupils take turns holding her lead while sharing thoughts and stories. In class, Annie roams carefully, mindful of pupils who might be anxious around dogs. “She is the perfect size and temperament,” says Mrs Blight. “Just enough presence to be comforting, never overwhelming.”
Comfort, Confidence, and Cuddles
Annie is more than just a friendly face – she is an emotional support superstar. She joins 1:1 sessions with pupils who need encouragement, helps those having a tough day, and can even act as a motivational reward. Mrs Blight recalls how one pupil has blossomed in confidence through their weekly time with Annie. The presence of Annie allows pupils to relax, read aloud without fear of judgment, and even experiment with new words in phonics sessions.
Annie’s training has been thorough and carefully supported by The Dog Mentor. From puppy classes to 1:1 sessions with a professional trainer, she learned how to be calm, confident, and attentive in a school setting. Her temperament was closely assessed to ensure she could work safely and effectively with children. Today, she supports staff as a trusted companion in the classroom, helping pupils feel at ease and providing gentle encouragement when it is needed most.

Favourite Spots and Activities
What does Annie enjoy most at school? Anywhere she can see what’s happening! She loves wandering the corridors, keeping up with the action, and joining pupils where she is needed. She has a soft spot for Mrs McIntyre’s rug in the sunshine and is equally happy perched in her bed, on the desk next to Mrs Blight. Friendly, confident, and sometimes a little sassy, Annie thrives in the School environment.
And if Annie had a “favourite subject” at Surbiton High School? Mrs Blight laughs: “Her favourite subject would definitely be Reading. Music isn’t her thing – especially when the strings or brass are playing on repeat!”
A Pup Who Makes a Difference
Whether it’s comforting a nervous pupil, encouraging someone to try something new, or simply bringing smiles to the corridors, Annie has become an irreplaceable part of the Prep School. Her presence reminds everyone that learning isn’t just about lessons and classrooms; it’s about care, joy, and the little moments that make each day brighter.
