Hands‑On Science for Year 5

Posted: 23rd January 2026

Year 5 boys from the Boys’ Prep enjoyed an exciting and enriching trip to the Science Museum in South Kensington this week, where hands‑on learning brought their classroom studies vividly to life. Their visit began in the dynamic Wonderlab gallery, an interactive space designed to spark curiosity and deepen scientific understanding.

The boys immersed themselves in a range of activities, investigating forces on giant swings, witnessing electricity crackle through a Tesla coil, experimenting with light and patterns, and exploring freezing and cooling at an atomic level. Each exhibit encouraged them to question, test and discover—developing both scientific thinking and confidence.

A lively rocket show rounded off the day, complete with a memorable demonstration of Newton’s Third Law of Motion using nothing more than a packet of crisps, helium and a candle.

The trip offered a powerful reminder of how experiential learning can inspire young scientists, reinforcing key concepts while igniting a genuine enthusiasm for discovery. A fantastic day for all involved!
