Summer Term Sporting Highights

Cricket 

A few of the highlights from our summer season:

  • U13 Lady Taveners Indoor 8-a-side County Runners Up  
  • U13 ESCA Hardball County Cup – Runners Up  
  • Manha A (Year 8) – 50 not out vs Reigate Grammar School  
  • Year 7 & 8 players trained with England Players Heather Knight and Adhil Rashid  
  • RGS U13 6 a-side Shield Winners  

Football 

This season has been our most exciting yet, with more pupils playing the sport than ever before. While the outstanding results rightly grab the headlines, what has made us most proud as staff is the way our pupils have conducted themselves – both on and off the pitch. 

The spirit and togetherness shown in both triumph and adversity, the pride in representing the School, and the unwavering commitment to playing the game the Surbiton way have been truly inspiring. 

Here are just some of the highlights from an unforgettable season: 

  • 15 teams 
  • 192 pupils involved
  • 212 fixtures played 
  • 762 goals scored 
  • 9 National Finals reached (and 9 won!) 
  • 16 pupils signed to Professional Game Academies 
  • 11 pupils playing representative football 
  • 2 pupils playing for England 

The season also included a fantastic tour to Porto, and unforgettable opportunities to play at professional venues such as Wembley, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and St George’s Park – the national training home of England’s football teams. 

Gymnastics 

In the Easter holidays, 16 gymnasts flew out to Barcelona for the Gymnastics Tour and competition at Sabadell Gimnastic Club. This two-way friendly competition was split into age group categories, with Spanish and English gymnasts competing in each. All performed super floor routines and vaults, and we came away we several medals, winning 2 of the 3 categories we entered. 

  • Category 2Rachel S (Year 7) 1st  and Elle J (Year 8) 2nd 
  • Category 3Amber Jo, 1st;, Eva R, 2nd; Sara P, 3rd (all Year 8) 
  • Category 4Isabel OV (Year 10) 3rd 

At the Acrobatics National Finals in May, the U11, U14 & U19 Girls Pairs, along with the U19 Group, all finished in the top 5 in the country! 

At the Floor + Vault National Finals in May, our U19 Girls Team comprising of Emmie A (Year 12), Annabel C (Year 11), Maeve H (Year 10), Eva R (Year 8) and Louisa S (Year 10), all performed outstanding floor routines and dynamic vaults to fight off some very tough competition and take the title, to be crowned the BSGA 2025 National Champions!Emmie also won the very prestigious award of Highest Overall Scoring Girl. 

We rounded off the season with the fun and friendly Rainbow Acro Competition. Several of our Advanced gymnasts took part, with the following pairs coming out on top:

Hockey 

The 2024-25 season has been nothing short of remarkable for Surbiton High School Hockey. Across the Senior School, we played an incredible 266 matches, involving 244 pupils across 18 senior teams. It has arguably been the most successful hockey season in the School’s history, with every performance squad reaching at least a national quarter-final.  

The level of commitment, skill development, and teamwork displayed across all age groups has been exemplary, and our pupils have once again demonstrated why Surbiton High School continues to be one of the leading hockey schools in the country.:

U12 & U13  

  • U12A – 3rd at Regionals  
  • U12B – 3rd in the County  
  • U13A – ISHC National Champions (Defeated King’s Worcester 5-2) & England Hockey National Finalists (May)  
  • Played: 22 | Won: 22 | Drawn: 0 | Lost: 0.  Goals For: 122 | Goals Against: 21 | Goal Difference: 101  
  • U13B – Tier 2 England Hockey Regional Runners-Up  

U14 & U15  

  • U14A – Regional Finalists & National Quarter finalists  
  • Played: 13 | Won: 9 | Drawn: 1 | Lost: 3 . Goals For: 38 | Goals Against: 28 | Goal Difference: 10  
  • U14B – Tier 2 Regional Winners  
  • U15 – ISHC National Champions (Defeated St George’s College 4-0)

U16  

  • U16A – England Hockey National Runners-Up (Lost on shuffles to St George’s, 1-1 in the match)

  • Goals For: 60 | Goals Against: 22 | Goal Difference: 38  
  • U16 Indoor – County Winners, Regional Winners & National Semi-Finalists

Senior Hockey  

  • 1st Team – National Bronze Medallists & St George’s 6s National Champions  
  • Played: 23 | Won: 20 | Drawn: 1 | Lost: 2 . Goals For: 121 | Goals Against: 28 | Goal Difference: 93  
  • U18 Indoor – County Winners, Regional Winners & National Finalists  
  • Played: 14 | Won: 11 | Drawn: 0 | Lost: 3  

Netball 

We have had an excellent netball season this year, and the entire Netball Department is incredibly proud of the dedication and hard work shown by all our teams and individual players. It has been wonderful to witness significant progress both individually and as teams throughout the year:  

Year 7 

  • The U12s reached the final 16 of the Sisters n Sport Plate, an impressive achievement in their first year of competition 
  • Borough league winners 
  • Borough tournament, the A-team were runners up in their section and the B team won their section. 

Year 8 

  • Ibstock tournament runners up 
  • Runners up at County Finals, just missing out in the final by two goals 
  • Borough league and tournament winners

Year 9 

  • Quarter finals in the Sisters n Sport plate 
  • Borough league and tournament runners up  

Year 10 

  • Ibstock tournament runners up. 
  • Made it through to County Finals. 
  • Borough league and tournament runners up. 

Year 12 

  • Ibstock tournament winners. 
  • Quarter finals in the Sisters N Sport plate. 

Rowing 

Year 9 (J14)  

  • The J14 squad has made excellent progress this year, building on the skills and fitness they established at J13. Everyone has improved their ergo scores, and there has been some outstanding progress with boat skills in smaller boats. 
  • Teddington Head: Gold, Bronze and 4th in WJ14 Octuple Sculls 
  • Scullery: WJ14 Octuple Sculls – A-boat Category Silver place, B-boat Category Gold place 
  • Poplar Regatta: WJ14 Octuple Sculls Gold and Silver place 
  • National Schools Regatta: WJ14 Octuple Sculls – A-boat Category 5th place, B-boat Category Bronze and 11th 
  • Reading Amateur Regatta: WJ14 Octuple Sculls – Gold place 
  • Thames Valley Park Regatta: four J14s raced in a composite crew with J15s, winning Gold in Wj14 Octuple Silver 
  • National Schools Regatta Bronze WJ14 Octuples 
  • Poplar Regatta WJ14 Octuple Gold
  • Reading Regatta WJ14 Octuple Gold 

Year 10 (J15)  

A very successful year with the J15 squad winning numerous medals. Some highlights are below: 

  • Poplar Regatta Docklands: 1st Eight Gold, 2nd Eight Gold 
  • National Schools Regatta: 2nd Eight Silver 
  • Reading Regatta: 1st Eight Gold, 2nd Eight Gold 
  • Marlow Regatta: 1st Eight Gold 
  • Thames Valley Park Regatta Gold in Eight, 2nd Eight Bronze, Gold in Octuple 
  • Poplar Regatta Gold WJ15 Eights 
  • Thames Ditton Regatta WJ15 Coxed Four 
  • Head of the River Race WJ15 Eight 
  • Reading Regatta double Gold WJ15 Eights 
  • National Schools Regatta WJ15 2nd Eight Silver 

Year 11 – J16  

The J16s have a had a fantastic season wining many national titles: 

  • Hammersmith Head: Gold 1st Eights 
  • Schools Head: Gold 1st Eights 
  • Schools Head: Gold 2nd Eights and New Course Record 
  • Junior Inter Regionals Regatta – Silver 1st Eights 
  • National schools Regatta: Silver1st Eights, Gold 2nd Eight, Coxed Four Gold C final 
  • National Schools Regatta WJ16 Second Eights GOLD 
  • National Schools Regatta WJ16 First Eights Silver 
  • Junior Inter-Regional Regatta Silver Medal WJ16 Eights 

Sixth Form – J18  

The senior squad racing mainly at National Level events produced some great racing and results: 

  • Kingston Small Boats Head: Gold in Quad and Coxed Four 
  • Head of the River Race: First Eight 7th, Second Eight 8th, Third Eight Gold 
  • Poplar Regatta at Docklands: Silver in Coxed and Coxless Fours 
  • Wallingford Regatta: Gold in Coxless Fours 
  • Henley Women’s Regatta: Win beating Blair Academy USA 
  • Gracie B selected to row for Ireland at the Coupe de la Jeunesse (Junior European Championships) 
  • Head of the River Race WJ18 1st Eight 7th 
  • Head of the River Race WJ18 2N Eight 4th 
  • Head of the River Race WJ18 3rd Eight GOLD 

Skiing 

At the London Schools, we were delighted with the following results:  

  • Years 7-8: Category 2 placed 2nd  
  • Years 9 – 10: Category 3 placed 1st  
  • Years 11+ Category 4 placed 1st  

Individual Success  

  • Category 3 (Years 9 – 10) – Freya T 1st; Saskia S, 2nd; Immy M, 3rd
  • Category 4 (Years 9 – 11) – Amy-Rose E, 1st; Dual slalom (Freya T, Saskia S, Immy M, Isabelle W), 1st  
  • Overall Best Overall School  and Best Overall London School  

At the English Championships, we were delighted with the following:  

  • Cat 1: Girls’ 4th  
  • Years 7 – 8: Category 2: Won gold  
  • Years 9 – 10 Cat 3: 1st  
  • Years 11+ Cat 4: 4th  
  • All teams qualified for British School Champs  

Surrey Schools Both Secondary Junior and Senior teams came 1st and 3rd

Interschools and BSA Champs in Verbier  – School placed 2nd in Interschools races  with multiple individual podiums across the age categories  

Huge congratulations to the following pupils on being selected to represent GB – Freya T (Year 10) and Gigi (Year 8)  

Tennis

  • We had a clean sweep at the Surrey Festival – winning every age group (U12, U14, U16, and U18), which was a fantastic start to the season.
  • Our U13 Team Tennis (Nationals) squad won their county group and now progress to the regional qualifying rounds.
  • The U18 team won the Nationals at the end of June, making them the top team in GB – a wonderful achievement.
  • At the ISTAs (Independent Schools) National Doubles event at Eton we were delighted with the following:
    • U18 ISTA National Doubles Champions – Frankie T (Year 12) and Christine F (Year 13)
    • U15 ISTA National Doubles Champions – Audrina N (Year 9) and Sophia C (Year 8)
    • U13 ISTA National Doubles Runners Up – Darcey O (Year 7) and Anais S-W (Year 8)
