Match Report: Surbiton Make History with Verney Cup Semi-Final Place

Posted: 10th June 2025

Surbiton 53/6 (12.2 overs) won by 4 wickets

Surbiton High Boys’ Prep produced a composed and courageous performance to claim a four-wicket win and book their place in the semi-finals of the Verney Cup – the furthest the School has ever progressed in the competition!

After being asked to bowl first, Surbiton’s attack was relentless from the outset. Matthew led the charge with an extraordinary spell of 4 wickets for just 4 runs, tearing through the opposition with precision and pace. He was well supported by Akhil, who picked up 3 wickets in a destructive burst. Harry and Mustafa each added a wicket to their names, and Angad delivered a sharp run-out to round off an outstanding team effort on the field.

The opponents were bowled out for just 49 in 10.2 overs, unable to withstand the consistent pressure applied by Surbiton.

The chase was not without its drama. Early wickets saw Surbiton wobble at 4/2, but a steady 8 from Akhil, supported by key contributions from Harry and Barney, kept the scoreboard ticking. With the game still in the balance at 33/6, Barney and Faaiz calmly guided Surbiton home, finishing unbeaten on 14 and 13 respectively.

Reaching their target in the 13th over, the boys sealed a memorable victory that earned them a historic semi-final spot.

Head Coach Mr Blood hailed the performance:

“The boys showed real heart and discipline today. This group deserves their success, and we can’t wait for the next challenge. It’s a proud day for Surbiton sport.”

The Verney Cup journey continues; history has already been made.
