Surbiton U11s produced a commanding performance in the second round of the Verney Cup, overcoming Rokeby with a well-rounded display of batting, bowling, and fielding.
After being asked to bat first, Surbiton posted an impressive 158 for 6 from their 20 overs. The innings was built on a powerful middle-order display, with Matthew A. leading the charge with a composed 25 from 27 balls. Jude C. brought some fireworks with a rapid 24 from just 16 deliveries, including a six that cleared the ropes with ease. Barney R. added a vital unbeaten 22, keeping the momentum going late in the innings.
Contributions also came from Jamie H. (19), Akhil P. (10), and Faaiz A. (11), each playing their part in a confident batting performance. Extras were plentiful, but Surbiton capitalised well to reach a strong total.
With the ball, Surbiton showed excellent control and discipline. Matthew A. was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 2 wickets, while Jude C., Faaiz A., and Yaqoob M. each claimed one. The bowling unit kept things tight, backed by sharp fielding and alert work in the deep.
Rokeby fought hard, but tight bowling and smart field placements kept them at bay. Surbiton closed out the match with Rokeby restricted to 127 from their 20 overs, sealing a 31-run win and a place in the next round of the Verney Cup.
After the match, Mr Blood praised the team, saying:
“All 11 boys were outstanding today, and the fielding was exactly what we have been working on. This is the furthest we have got to in the Verney Cup and I am proud of the boys.”
