Twelve Year 12 Further Mathematicians from Surbiton High Sixth Form recently attended this year’s prestigious Maths Fest at The Royal Institution in London. The event provided an invaluable opportunity for pupils to explore mathematical concepts beyond the standard curriculum.
Throughout the day, pupils engaged in thought-provoking talks delivered by leading experts. Topics included analysing crowd flows, exploring the mathematics behind the Rubik’s Cube, and investigating the geometrical challenges involved in video game design.
A highlight of the event was the School’s debut participation in the “Maths Slam” competition, which invites pupils to present on a captivating mathematical topic they have explored independently. Emily, one of our Year 12 students, proudly represented Surbiton High School with an insightful presentation on Benford’s Law.
Benford’s Law is a fascinating mathematical phenomenon that reveals how leading digits in naturally occurring numbers are more likely to be small, such as 1, 2, or 3, than larger numbers like 7, 8, or 9. Emily explained that the number one is by far the most likely leading digit.
Her impressive presentation captivated both judges and audience members alike, showcasing Surbiton High Sixth Form’s strong commitment to fostering mathematical curiosity.
