Surbiton High School proudly congratulates Dr Alex Calverley, Head of Physics, for receiving the Secondary Education Award from the Royal Astronomical Society. This prestigious honour recognises his exceptional contributions to astronomy education and his transformative leadership of the British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad (BAAO) programme.
Dr Calverley’s voluntary efforts have included compiling question papers, organising national training camps, mentoring students, and leading the UK team at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). His dedication has inspired countless pupils, creating opportunities for those who previously had little exposure to these fields.
Under his leadership, the UK IOAA team achieved unprecedented success in 2023, winning five gold medals and topping the international medal table. Dr Calverley’s commitment to fostering diversity ensures that pupils from all backgrounds have the opportunity to compete on the global stage.
We celebrate Dr Calverley for his extraordinary contributions and for leaving an indelible mark on astronomy education both at Surbiton High School and across the United Kingdom.
