Year 1 Boys Embark on an Exciting Dinosaur Adventure at the Natural History Museum

Posted: 9th October 2024

The Year 1 boys of Surbiton High Boys’ Preparatory School recently embarked on a memorable educational trip to the renowned Natural History Museum in London. The visit was designed to enhance their understanding of the fascinating world of dinosaurs, bringing to life much of what they have been studying in class.

Upon arrival at the museum, the boys were greeted with the vast collections of prehistoric wonders. The highlight of their visit was an engaging morning workshop where they were introduced to the exciting world of palaeontology. They learned firsthand how palaeontologists meticulously excavate and clean fossils, gaining insight into the scientific processes used to uncover ancient history buried beneath the earth.

The workshop focused on the remarkable discovery of Sophie, the stegosaurus. Unearthed in Wyoming, USA, Sophie is the most complete stegosaurus fossil ever discovered and now resides at the Natural History Museum. The boys were captivated by the story of how Sophie was found and marveled at the precision and care required to piece together the remains of such a magnificent creature.

After learning about palaeontology, the boys were given the chance to take on the role of palaeontologists themselves. They thoroughly enjoyed constructing their own 3D jigsaw puzzle of a dinosaur, simulating the process of assembling a dinosaur skeleton just as scientists do. This hands-on experience helped them appreciate the delicate work of piecing together ancient fossils, allowing them to apply their newfound knowledge in a practical way.

Overall, the trip to the Natural History Museum was a resounding success. The Year 1 boys returned to school brimming with excitement and new knowledge, eager to continue their exploration of the world of dinosaurs in their lessons.
