Story SLAM Success

Posted: 10th February 2023

Story Slam southern region GRAND final was held at Walthamstow Primary Academy on a sunny Thursday. During the morning we participated in various different workshops led by Isabel Thomas. Isabel has written over two hundred children’s books and articles based on science and the natural world. In a workshop we were told how she writes books based on questions – the most random hypothesis, the better. In groups, collaborating with another school, we then created our own description of a creature from a picture. We then swopped descriptions and tried to recreate the creature described by drawing it is as creatively as possible. The final pictures were fascinating and helped us imagine strange and wonderful living things.

Isabel then led us through tricks to write and present a story. She wants people to feel how she feels about a subject. Emotions are really important. She told us how vital it is to change an emotion by altering your tone of voice. It is important to manipulate and engage your reader by changing your facial expression and thinking where your eyes travel.

The final presentation of stories was after lunch, provided by Walthamstow Primary.

The tension built as we listened to tales of wonder and awe.

And the WINNER is Eva R from Surbiton Girls’ Prep for a story of wonder, feeling and  desperation!
