Oxbridge Offers

Posted: 30th January 2023

In an exceptionally competitive year for Oxbridge admission, Surbiton High School is delighted to announce that seven students have just received offers to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. With another student, Ava, deferring her offer from last year to read History at Oxford, this means eight Surbiton High School students are off to Oxbridge in 2023.

The offers just in are:

Oxford:

Annabelle – Chemistry

Lauren – Chemistry

Juliet – English and French

(Also Ava, who received her offer for History last year)

Cambridge:

Ella  – History

Isobel  – Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Hebrew and Spanish)

Lorna – Anglo Saxon Norse and Celtic Studies

Sienna – History of Art

Our strongly embedded Oxbridge Programme is the foundation for these successes. Between 2017 and 2023, 50 students have received Oxbridge offers. Furthermore, over 95% have successfully met the conditions of their offer.

In a context where Oxbridge offers to independent schools have gone from nearly 50% in 2010 to below 30% in 2021, it is testament to the School’s students and staff that our offers have gone in the reverse direction. We are a school that prides itself on adding value and bringing out the best in everyone; our approach to Oxbridge and university admissions is no exception.

Mr Terry McDermott, Director of Careers and Head of Oxbridge, stated:

I am delighted by our Oxbridge results, not least given this is probably the most competitive year yet (a product of Oxbridge reaching more and better state school students as well as more competition from international applicants). However, regardless of the outcome of a student’s application, what is even more gratifying is to see so many of our students continuing to challenge themselves by applying (a record number of applicants this year in fact). As in previous years, it is wonderful to see such a broad range of degrees represented in our offers, showing the inquisitive spirit so characteristic of our students.

Lorna, who has an offer for Anglo Saxon Norse and Celtic Studies at Cambridge, said:

I’m totally over the moon to receive my Cambridge offer – continuing to pursue the passions which began at Surbiton High School, such as Latin and medieval history, will be such a privilege. I’ll forever be grateful for the School’s University Fair for introducing me to Anglo Saxon Norse and Celtic Studies as well as for the constant dedicated support I received throughout the application process that helped me both thrive academically and flourish in my other pursuits, such as being Deputy Head Girl and a keen writer and poet.
