Boys’ Prep Carol Service

Posted: 14th December 2022

Boys in KS2 gathered with their families to celebrate the start of the holiday season at the Carol Service. After three years of not being able to enjoy this event in person, it was wonderful to see so many people join us for the Carol Service this year. From the music to the readings, the magic of Christmas came to life.

Findlay began the service, stunning the congregation by singing the first verse of ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel’ acapella. Standing at the front, he filled the church with the majestic melody before the rest of Year 6 joined him for the remainder of the song. As the year group processed down the centre aisle carrying tea-lights, the magic of the season came to life. Following on from the Reverend’s welcome, Sam angelically sang the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ from the balcony.

Throughout the service, Year 6 boys read the story of the birth of baby Jesus. Each of the boys who read, spoke clearly and with expression.

All boys in KS2 sang beautifully throughout the Carol Service. Whether it was singing hymns with the congregation or in the Curriculum or Chamber Choirs, their voices sounded heavenly in the church. The Lower Curriculum Choir sang ‘Bethlehem Night’ and was the first Surbiton choir to sing. They created a strong sound and confidently sang about the birth of Jesus. ‘The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy’ was sung by the Upper Curriculum Choir shortly after the Lower Chamber Choir performed. Year 6 sang from the staging on the alter and Year 5 were like angels in the balcony. The sound created from the different levels of voices was magical.

The Upper Chamber Choir performed a version of ‘The Little Drummer Boy’. The two-part song was a delight and performed beautifully by the boys. The up-beat song, ‘The Shepherd’s Spiritual’, sung by the Lower Chamber Choir, incorporated dynamics and the excitement of the shepherds hurrying to see the newborn king. The final song sung by the Boys’ Prep School was ‘Hurry Now to Bethlehem’, sung by the combined chamber choirs. The harmonies sung by the boys echoed throughout the church and filled hearts with the magic of Christmas.
