We are so proud of Year 10 pupil, Avye Couloute, who has been named a Young Hero in the 2022 National Lottery Awards.
15-year-old Avye founded Girls Into Coding, a Community Interest Company (CIC) and not-for-profit Social Enterprise. Their aim is to engage more girls in STEM, through education events, activities, and opportunities to meet other women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
“I believe that it’s important for girls and women to see and be aware of ordinary girls and women doing cool things in the STEM world. I’m on a mission to create stimulating opportunities and events to engage girls to consider further STEM activities, studies and careers. After repeatedly observing that the majority of attendees at my workshops were boys, I was determined to encourage more girls to give STEM a go. So, I decided to set up a series of events targeting girls. I came up with the idea of ‘Girls Into Coding’. These events offer girls aged 10-14 an opportunity to explore coding, physical computing and robotics. With my mum, we reach out to other female role models in STEM careers, inviting them to give lightning talks at Girls Into Coding events.”
Avye started coding and attending physical computing workshops at 7 years old. She is very active in the tech and maker community, dedicating lots of her spare time to exploring and learning about coding and technology. Avye is enthusiastic about sharing her skills and experiences with others.
Speaking about the award, Avye said: “It’s a real honour to have been named Young Hero of the Year 2022 by the National Lottery Awards. Thank you everybody for supporting me with my mission to get more girls into Tech!”
