The Music Scholars’ Recital was a long-awaited for event, following 19 months without live music-making and with two previous Music Scholars’ events moved online. The 2022 concert featured the world premiere of ‘Co-Verture’ – a work created by our Composer in Residence, Mr Dave Webb. This concert version was a re-arrangement of his original work, accommodating the changes to the line-up of the Music Scholars.
Each year, the Director of Music commissions the Composer in Residence to create a work that is bespoke to all our Music Scholars, in regard to their principal or second study. Mr Webb not only considers their musical ability when composing, but also the individual personalities and musical context of each musician. For ‘Co-Verture’, Mrs Newman invited Mr Webb to create a work that was “fun to play and full of melody” – a piece that brought undiluted joy to the performers.
As you listen to the piece, you will hear recurring musical ideas and motifs that are passed around between the musicians, like a conversation had between remote locations – the musicians are sharing a musical conversation despite the distance originally enforced during the lockdowns. This live performance was a wonderful opportunity for the Music Scholars to come back together, united in their talents and tell the listener a joyful story!
