To celebrate Black History Month, Years 5 and 6 attended a virtual event with poet Joseph Coelho. Joseph Coelho is a performance poet and playwright. His plays have received special note from The Verity Bargate Award and The Bruntwood Playwriting Competition. He has written plays for young people for Theatre Royal York, Pied Piper, Polka and The Unicorn Theatres. Joseph has been a guest poet on Radio 4’s Front Row, and has performed poems for Channel 4 and CBeebies Radio. His debut poetry collection, ‘Werewolf Club Rules’ is published by Frances Lincoln, and won the CLPE CLiPPA Poetry Award 2015.
Joseph spoke about his life and experience as a writer. He gave inspiring ideas on how the boys could be authors too. One of his stories is currently featured in an exciting new book called ‘Happy Here’. Published for primary aged children, ‘Happy Here’ features inspiring stories from emerging and established black British authors and illustrators.
