Last week we were so pleased to welcome the new 2020 Reception class to Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School!

We know how special that first day of school is for our youngest learners in Reception, and also their parents. This year was slightly more challenging but we wanted the day to be memorable for all the right reasons! Parents spend a long time choosing the perfect school for their child, but are still bound to feel a little anxious as they wave them off, watching them as they take their first steps into the world of education. Therefore we wanted to mark the moment in a truly special way: over a cup of tea and a beautiful poem.

Each parent was sent on their way with a tea bag and a strict instruction to make a drink, take a break and spend a few moments reflecting on their gorgeous little girl. To help, we also enclosed a really special poem, just reminding them that we would love, care for and encourage them as our parents would want us to! We look forward to building on these relationships in the coming weeks and months, and most likely over more than one mug of tea.

We understand that you are scared
to wave your child goodbye
and leave her in a teacher’s hands
don’t worry if you cry!

We’re used to weeping parents
It’s hard to leave I know.
But it’s time to share her (just a bit)
To help her learn and grow.

Let us reassure you
That we’ll give your child our best
We’ll wipe her tears, soothe her fears
And change her dirty vest!

If your darling child is full of cold
We’ll blow their nose all day
Just like you, we’ll care for them
In a special way.

We’ll treat her like we would our own
We’ll catch her from a fall and
If there is ANY problem
We’ll be sure to tell you all.

It’s true she’ll grow to love us
She’ll take of school a lot
It doesn’t mean they hate you
And that you should lose the plot!

We’ll tell you a secret.
That when your child is here
They talk to us as much of you
Of this please have no fear.

You’ll always be their parent
Whilst teachers come and go
To them you are their number one
This we truly know.

Soon you’ll see some changes
In your beautiful little girl
She’ll become more independent
As she gives new things a whirl.

We’ll teach them all we have to give
To share, climb and to write
But to you they safely will return
To tuck them in at night.
