SKI REPORT – NATIONAL SCHOOLS

Open Teams 2018
What a hectic start to the academic year! Straight away, we were off to Chatham for the regional round of the English Schools’ races which got underway on 16 September: with 8 Girls’ Prep pupils and 20 senior School girls, Surbiton definitely had a presence. Not fazed by the delay, the girls got down to business, skiing their socks off in what was a tough regional round, picking up some great results and qualifications to the finals for all four of the A team across the age groups.

The first weekend in October saw the team back on the road; this time to Norwich for English Schools’ National Finals. The U12 team, made up of Prep Girls’ pupils, were up first with some really technical skiing, which secured top spot by an amazing 7 seconds. Next up were the U14s; after a little mistake on the second run things weren’t looking too good, but the girls stayed strong as a team to come home with the silver medals.

A quick change of course, then it was time for the senior age groups. Equipment issues for the U16s got the spectators’ heart rates pumping, but the girls were calm and knew what they had to do. Fighting hard, they got back to within 3 seconds to secure the bronze medals. This left us with just one more race. With the girls skiing exactly to plan, the U19 team retain their title as English Schools’ champions.

This was just the end of the age group competition, but it was all still to play for the following day in the open championships. Having been the overall female team champions for the last 3 years the pressure was on …. or so we thought!  The girls took everything completely in their stride, putting down three solid runs for both the A team and the B team, resulting in more silverware coming home to Surbiton – 1st pace for the A team and 3rd for the B team, both securing selection for the British National Championship in Edinburgh in November.

This is a fantastic achievement down to the hard work and commitment of all of the girls, as well as the nationally recognised ski programme running at across all three Schools at Surbiton High.
