TES Independent School Awards 2018

We are delighted to announce The TES Independent School Awards have shortlisted Surbiton High School in the Creativity category.

The Creativity category description states: ‘This award is for independent schools that put creativity at the heart of their work. This isn’t about individual projects in art, drama, music or design – although it could take in one or all of these subjects – this is about making children think differently, beyond the structures of the conventional curriculum. Ideally, applications should be a whole-school or cross-curricular approach to one or more projects and there should be evidence of a blossoming in creativity in pupils.’

Creativity is at the heart of the School ethos as we aim to inspire, encourage and empower our pupils; through developing positive learning habits, creative thinking and inventive teaching methods. Pulling on different strands of creativity, we are extremely proud to have been one of the first schools in the world to appoint an Entrepreneur in Residence who has developed our creative learning programme and is dedicated to ensuring our pupils think ‘outside the box’. We are also particularly fortunate to have benefitted from a Writer in Residence and an Artist in Residence over the past few years.

Our submission drew on all these strands: demonstrating our approach to developing an entrepreneurial spirit by unleashing our pupils’ creative potential through different age-based activities; harnessing creative thinking through our Student Laureates programme and partnering with the Young StorySLAM; and working collaboratively between departments with our Art and Biology independent learning project. This project involved a mix of social and personal development, use of our digital strategy as well as Art and Biology.

Fingers crossed for the announcements in February 2018.
