Charity
Throughout the academic year, girls and boys in each of the three schools lead on a variety of charitable endeavours. Significant amounts of money are raised each term to support charities that are determined by the pupils themselves through the respective School Councils and during hustings through the House System. In the Junior Girls' School and the Boys' Prep School, representatives on the two School Councils make presentations in support of their preferred charities and make a termly contribution following a series of events and activities. In September, the Sixth Form Heads of House in the Senior School organised hustings at which sixty girls made pitches for a total of forty local, national and global charities. Each House elected their chosen charity and during a House-themed Mufti Day funds were raised for each of the six charities, PA Nepal (Austen), Marie Curie (Curie), Thoeun's Trust (Fonteyn), Cancer Research (Nightingale), Stop the Traffik (Pankhurst), Evelina's Children's Heart Organisation (Teresa). Heads of House have presented individual assemblies to increase the profile of their chosen charities in readiness for a May Charity Fair. The House Fashion Show in February was an incredible success and raised over £3000 for Full Circle.
At a local level, we have continued to raise money for the Joel project for the homeless of Kingston. Reverend Holmes presented an inspiring whole school assembly and organised a presentation to Year 7 in PSHE in which beneficiaries of the charity offered an insight into the homeless community. At various points through the year, girls initiate their own projects to support appeals around the world, including raising money for this year's visit to Mongolia by a committed group of Sixth Formers.
Enrichment groups in the school support the global charitable organisations, Amnesty International and Free the Children. Twenty girls made a powerful assembly on the silent minority that lack fundamental human rights around the world. The Mors-bag project in support of Free the Children is an example of social enterprise organised by girls in Years 8-10 on Friday afternoons. They have manufactured fifty bags to date and sold them for donation at a variety of school events.
