Sixth Form
Entry Requirements
To qualify for entry to Surbiton High Sixth Form girls normally need a minimum of eight GCSE passes at grade A*-B, including A in Mathematics and English Literature or Language. For subjects girls wish to continue to study at A-level they must achieve a Grade A.
Surbiton High School is committed to bringing out the best in each and every pupil. We have high expectations of our pupils and the School ensures that girls receive equal levels of challenge through access to a suitably differentiated and stimulating curriculum.
Provision for the most able pupils comes in many forms: in-class approaches, such as the coherent management of pupil groupings, and the development of independent and flexible learning by allowing our pupils to organise their own work, to carry out tasks unaided, evaluate their work and become self-critical. The focus is on strategic and spontaneous learning as preparation for life as leaders in an unstructured and diverse world.
Alongside this we provide activities outside the normal confines of the classroom and curriculum such as Master-classes, Visiting Speakers, an Inspiration zone in the library, and lunch and evening Careers events to raise awareness of the potential of future study. Pupils are also encouraged to attend ‘Surbiton Speak', our regular lecture programme.
Beyond the curriculum and across subject areas we have had successes with the following projects:
• EPQ - an A-level equivalent award for girls in Year 12 wishing to explore a subject well beyond the curriculum
• Open University modules
• AS Critical Thinking
• Annual Activity Week which challenges pupils to think in creative and innovative ways and which builds resilience, leadership and team-working skills
How to Apply for Entry to Surbiton High Sixth Form
If your daughter is already at Surbiton High, she will have a "Taster Day" in the Summer Term of Year 10 which gives her a chance to sample Sixth Form lessons and life - including not wearing uniform and being free to go out for lunch. Then, in the Autumn Term of Year 11 she will attend the Sixth Form Options Evening. This is her chance to find out all about the subjects on offer so that she can choose which ones she wishes to study in Year 12 and beyond. That is followed by an individual guidance interview, when we talk with her in detail about her choices and ensure they match her academic potential and career/university aspirations. After her mock GCSEs and the Year 11 Parents' Evening she is then asked to finalise her subject choices in early February.
If your daughter is not currently a student at Surbiton High School, she is encouraged to attend the Sixth Form Open Morning on Friday 27th September 2013, when she will have an opportunity to tour the School and Sixth Form Centre and meet with subject staff. Application for entry to the Sixth Form is through the Registrar. The closing date for registrations for entry in September 2013 is 1 November 2013. The Registration Form and Subject Registration Form are available on the website. Interviews are held in November and December.
We also offer Sixth Form Scholarships and Bursaries. Please click here for more information.
