Surbiton High School’s Assistant Director of Music premières Choral Commission - 17/06/2010
Tom Wiggall, Assistant Director of Music at Surbiton High School, premiered 'Amor Nos Semper Ducat', a choral commission for the Junior, Senior and Chamber choirs (around 250 students) at the School's May Concert on Thursday 13th May. The work was commissioned to celebrate Surbiton High School's 125th year and the text drew from a number of sources including the school motto. Tom received a standing ovation from the audience. Vice Principal Silas Edmonds described the performance as "...moving and breath-taking in equal measure. A wonderful technical achievement by both our Composer in Residence, Mr Tom Wiggall, and our girls singing in the choir, conducted with aplomb by our Director of Music, Mr Jeremy Martin. A moment to be hugely proud of our pupils and our School. "
In addition to Tom's teaching commitments, he composes and writes for stage, screen and concert performance. Tom's most recently completed work includes: ‘X-Force', music for a recent IBM viral campaign; ‘Alban', an opera commissioned by St Albans Cathedral; ‘The Tree of Life', a festival anthem commissioned for Southwell Minster and the title music for Melvyn Bragg's ITV1 series ‘Faith in the Frame'.
In recent years Tom has also composed for independent film and theatre projects, having his music played in venues including the Riverside Studios, The Soho Curzon, The Criterion Theatre and The Royal Opera House, and for television and radio, including music for a Channel 4 documentary of the artist David Shrigley, and arrangements for BBC2's ‘Friday Night is Music Night'.
