Surbiton High School take Gold at the National Schools’ Rowing Regatta - 16/06/2010

Surbiton High's rowers excelled at the National Schools' Regatta over the Bank Holiday weekend. It was a long and intense weekend, which started with the J14 and J15 squads travelling up to Nottingham on the Thursday evening for their races the next morning and ended with the Championship Pair and Quad racing late on Sunday afternoon. We had sun, rain and, most notably on the Sunday, 20mph winds, which never makes for fair rowing conditions.
Notable results were the J15 squad utterly dominating their age category. The 1st VIII won Gold in the event and the 2nd VIII were also finalists - in total we had seven Surbiton girls in this final - Alice Meadows, Seren Orsman, Susanna Carr, Katie Winter (cox) and Sophie Kiedaisch, Sophie N Hughes and Susie Bird (cox). It is a great achievement at the end of a successful season and a marvellous stepping stone for these girls moving into the older squad next year.
More success came later in the day in the Girls' Championship VIIIs - the Blue Riband event of the regatta. This had five SHS girls on board - Frankie Hughes, Becky Thompson, Grace Prigmore, Courtenay Hallwood and Sophie H Hughes.
Courtenay, Frankie and Becky also won Bronze medals in the Championship Quad and Pair on the Sunday. This squad, combined with the J15s coming up indicates that Surbiton girls may well be mounting serious challenges to Headington's dominance of the Girls' title in the coming years. We also look forward to some of the Senior Squad racing at Women's Henley later in June.
