Surbiton High Junior Girls take part in Kingston Museum’s Fashion Workshop - 10/06/2010
As part of their History Week the Junior Girls' took part in a fashion workshop run by the Kingston Museum. Many of the girls were given the opportunity to dress in costumes giving them the opportunity to see how fashion has changed over 2000 years. It was a lovely experience for the girls to learn about how our fashion and use of different textiles has changed over the years. They even learnt about plastic and how it can be used to make clothes, though were told not to stand too near to the fire!
"I liked watching people dress up. I never knew ladies in the 16th Century wore an item called a ‘bum roll', which made the ladies' bottoms stick out." Elsa James 3G
"My favourite part was seeing how the Tudor men showed off." Jasmine Ram 3S
"I enjoyed the fashion history workshop because I liked learning about what they used to wear. I also enjoyed learning the parts of the different clothes and what they were used for. The soldiers from World War Two wore itchy clothes made out of wool with buttons on the jackets." Abigail Gundogan 3G
"The workshop was really fun. I had to dress up as a soldier. I wore an itchy and very heavy hat. The hat kept the soldiers head safe. The coat was made of rough cotton. I could imagine what it was like to be a soldier. I really enjoyed it." Jemma Johnston 4L
"The Year 4 fashion workshop was really interesting. I found out what people wore throughout ages from the era of the Romans to the 1960s fashion. I dressed up as a working lady from World War Two. I had to wear a big black suit and a strong heavy belt. My favourite outfit was the maid from the Victorian era; it had a pale blue apron and was white and frilly." Brielle Smidt-Wallis 4L
"During the fashion workshop we went through different periods of history and saw how clothes changed through time, a few girls were lucky enough to try them on. Some were nice, some were funny and some outfits had things that we do not have today. The men in the Tudor period liked fat thighs and the women liked thin waists. Everyone enjoyed themselves." Ella Mackenzie 4VC
"It was a very enjoyable moment as I got chosen to dress up as a women Tudor. It looked funny as I had to wear a funny bum pad!" Sarah Boucher 5O
"For part of our history week everyone took part in a fashion workshop. A lady from Kingston Museum came in with lots of historic costumes. We all enjoyed dressing up in them and learning lots of facts about fashion a long time ago." Isabel Elliot 6M
"The lady talked to us about the particular materials, styles and uses of different fashions throughout the ages. She asked us to come and dress up in clothes worn in different time periods. It was a very interesting workshop and we all enjoyed seeing our friends in old fashioned clothes." Hannah Scholes 6R
"I found the talk about fashion in history really interesting. I also found out fascinating information about the Tudors. Did you know they had to cover their head if they were not married?" Anna Meyler 5O
"During History week we had a fashion workshop. I dressed up as a Roman. Luckily none of it was real (apart from the helmet) or it would be even heavier. Many other Year 5s dressed up and we found it very funny. We all enjoyed it very much and wish to do it again." Amelia Tomlin 5N
"We did the history fashion talk on 26th May 2010. The person who did it was from the Kingston Museum, she talked about clothes that people wore back in the olden times. A couple of people dressed up as Romans and Victorians. Some of these magnificent costumes were replicas but a few of them were real from the museum." Ava Muir 5N
